BLOG: Angus Collins and the Great British Odyssey
Adventure comes in many forms. At the Foundation, we support it on the page through the Adventure Writing Prize, but also in real life, through individuals who push boundaries, embrace challenge, and inspire us with their courage.
Real-life adventure matters to us because it reflects the spirit of the Prize - everyone should have access to adventure in all its forms. Wilbur Smith was a fearless adventurer and outdoorsman, and his love for discovery, of people and places, shines through in his novels. Adventure pushes us to explore the unknown, whether through fiction or lived experience, and it reminds us of our shared human resilience.
Angus Collins is one of those people. He is an endurance athlete, record-breaking ocean rower, and mental health advocate. At our 2025 Awards Reception, Angus delivered an unforgettable speech about his journey and his battles with mental health. His words were deeply inspiring, and we’re thrilled to be able to share them with you.
Watch Angus's speech at the 2025 Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize:
Angus has rowed across the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, setting multiple records and becoming one of the most successful ocean rowers in the world. But behind the accolades is a personal journey defined not only by physical endurance, but by vulnerability and resilience. Having faced severe mental health challenges, Angus now uses his story to break stigmas and spark honest conversations about masculinity, strength and mental wellbeing.
In the summer of 2025, he embarked on his most ambitious expedition yet: The Great British Odyssey. This was an attempt to become the first person to circumnavigate Great Britain unsupported, and raise vital funds for James’ Place, a charity providing vital support for suicidal men. Though weather and technical issues meant Angus couldn’t complete the row, he views the experience as helping him redefine success.

It was a journey of growth, reflection and inspiration, and learning when it’s okay to ask for help. Angus's mission reminds us that adventure is not just about reaching the finish line, but about courage, perseverance and the willingness to share the lessons learned along the way.
